ROTARY CLUB OF PONDICHERRY & MARG SWARNABHOOMI JOIN HANDS FOR PUDUVAI MARATHON 2010
~ Aimed to create awareness on global warming ~
Puducherry, February 14, 2010: Rotary Club of Pondicherry and MARG Swarnabhoomi, the mega-infrastructure project of MARG Limited, India's leading diversified infrastructure development company, today, joined hands to organise the Puduvai Marathon 2010. The marathon, aptly themed 'Go Green. Save the Earth. Stop Global Warming', saw the participation of over 8000 runners from all walks of life. The objective of the marathon was to spread awareness about global warming, which is a burning issue today.
The Puduvai Marathon 2010 was flagged off by Thiru. B. Srikanth, PPS., Senior Superintendent of Police, Law and Order, at 6:00 A.M. this morning from the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex at Uppalam. Thiru. Malladi Krishna Rao, Hon'ble Minister for Revenue, Tourism, Sports & Youth Affairs, the Government of Puducherry, distributed the prizes to the winners. Also present on the occasion were Thiru. P. Mathew Samuel, Director of Tourism, Govt. of Puducherry, Thiru. Dr. S. Sundaravadivelu, Director of Education, Dept. of Education, Govt. of Puducherry, along with several special invitees.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. S Ramakrishnan, CEO, MARG Group said, "It gives us great pleasure to be a part of the Puduvai Marathon. Sports is something that binds people in a city, lifts the spirit of the country and is loved by all. Marathon is one such event where beyond religion, beyond discrimination, all people come together to move towards one destination that is, for a better world and better humanity. Historic beginnings are made through holistic events & we are delighted to be part of this marathon in association with the Rotary Club of Pondicherry."
The marathon was held in 4 categories:
- 14 kms. marathon circuit for men, with Rs.15,000 as first prize, Rs.10,000 as second prize, and Rs.4000 as third prize
- 7 kms. circuit for women, with Rs.10,000 as first prize, Rs.7,000 and Rs.4000 as second and third prizes respectively
- 7 kms. marathon for boys under 14 years of age, with Rs. 5,000 as first prize, Rs.2,000 as second and third prizes respectively
- 7 kms. marathon for girls under 14 years of age, with Rs. 5,000 as first prize, Rs.2,000 as second and third prizes respectively
Registration was free for the participants.
The first 2000 pre-registered participants who arrived at the venue received free T-shirts and caps. Over 1000 tree saplings were also given out.
